Buying Another Fifty Years for Walls Already Built

Tuckpointing, brick replacement, chimney rebuilds, and historic masonry restoration across Cedar City and Iron County.

The Challenge

Crumbling mortar gets worse, not better

Failing mortar is the most common — and most ignored — masonry problem. Water finds the joint, freeze-thaw widens it, and the joint behind the visible face is gone long before the surface shows it. Once mortar fails, water reaches the back of the wall and the units themselves start to spall. Catch it early and the fix is cosmetic. Catch it late and it's a wall.
Our Approach

Match the mortar, tooth in the repair, leave no seam

Good masonry repair starts with mortar that matches the original — same compressive strength, same color, same joint profile. Modern hard mortar in an old soft-brick wall does more damage than the original failure. We test, match, and tool joints to read as original.
  • Mortar mix matched to original — soft mortar for historic, hard for modern
  • Color-tinted to match weathered tone, not just fresh tone
  • Joint tooling matched to original profile (concave, raked, struck)
  • Damaged units removed and replaced one at a time
  • Structural assessment before cosmetic repair on cracked walls

Why A to Z

Why repair with A to Z

Mortar Matching

We match compressive strength, color, and joint profile — not just slap in fresh gray mortar.

Structural Eye

We tell you when a crack is cosmetic vs structural — and don't upsell either way.

Heritage-Sensitive

On older walls we use period materials and techniques so the repair doesn't age the building.

Coordinated Trades

Chimney work coordinated with roofing, flue work with HVAC where needed.

Project Spotlight

Chimney rebuild + tuckpoint — Brian Head cabin

A 1970s ski cabin with a deteriorated stone chimney partially separated from the structure and a brick facade with widespread joint failure. We dismantled the chimney above the firebox, installed a stainless liner, re-laid with salvaged stone, and re-pointed roughly 800 sq ft of brick on the main facade with matched soft mortar. Owners now have a working fireplace and a wall good for another fifty years.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Q.How often does mortar need re-pointing?

Most exterior mortar joints need attention every 50–75 years. Joints exposed to heavy weather or freeze-thaw cycles can need it sooner. Signs you're due: crumbling mortar, joints you can scrape out with a key, hairline cracks through joints.

Q.Can you replace individual damaged bricks?

Yes — spalled, cracked, or face-popped bricks come out one at a time and we tooth in matching units with matched mortar. The repair blends in once it weathers.

Q.Do you do chimney rebuilds?

Yes — full chimney rebuilds from the firebox up, partial rebuilds above the roofline, crown repair, and stainless flue liner installation. We coordinate with the roofer for flashing.

Q.How do I know if my masonry needs structural repair vs cosmetic?

Stair-step cracking across multiple courses, walls out of plumb, or shelf angles rusting through usually mean structural attention. Hairline cracks through individual mortar joints are typically cosmetic. We assess on site at no charge.
